The most common use of these is with dates, as in <span style="font-weight: bold;">20</span>th. There the 'th' is a superscript; that is, smaller text that is raised. Subscripts are most often used in technical language such as if we refer to water as <span style="font-weight: bold;">H</span>2<span style="font-weight: bold;">O</span>. There the subscript is the '2'; smaller text that is lowered.<br /><br />To switch to subscript mode or to change the selected text to a subscript, hold down the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Control </span>key and press the <span style="font-weight: bold;">=</span> key. This same combination will also set selected subscript text back to normal and switch out of subscript mode, as with the keyboard shortcuts for bold or italic mode.<br /><br />To switch to superscript mode or to change the selected text to a superscript, hold down the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Control </span>key and the <span style="font-weight: bold;">Shift</span> key, and then press the <span style="font-weight: bold;">+</span> key. As with subscripts the same combination switches back to normal text to if presses again.<br /><br />This tip applies to <span style="font-style: italic;">Microsoft Word</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">PowerPoint</span>, but unfortunately not to <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel.</span>Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com70tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-20009984758609432772012-05-05T13:50:00.000+01:002012-05-05T13:56:06.795+01:00How to show unread messages in Gmail (Again)<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlRjnreBTCk9-spYxnF996jFZSfRfTg_sJdhIge5ZKSMqUZX3X-XRZEaa3CAzY9ep7hwvIZJxTFDeInet56rgrc1J0ZHKFPjDyM7iNdZMpqCwFicMDTSNJfHhfGGJulslwRx6nvGnDzYS/s1600/gmail-logo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="100" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSlRjnreBTCk9-spYxnF996jFZSfRfTg_sJdhIge5ZKSMqUZX3X-XRZEaa3CAzY9ep7hwvIZJxTFDeInet56rgrc1J0ZHKFPjDyM7iNdZMpqCwFicMDTSNJfHhfGGJulslwRx6nvGnDzYS/s320/gmail-logo.jpg" width="103" /></a>
A while ago I posted a short article about <a href="http://http//bloodycomputer.blogspot.co.uk/2012/02/how-to-show-unread-messages-in-gmail.html">how to list unread emails in Google Mail</a>. I have found a way to also list unread emails which have a particular label. Simply enter <b>label:unread label:XXXXX</b> in the search bar - replacing <b>XXXXX</b> with the particular label applied to unread messages you wish to find. For example, if you have some messages labelled with <b>Work</b>, you can find any of those that are unread by searching for <b>label:unread label:Work</b>.<br />
<br />
This could also be used to find those messages to which two or more labels are applied.Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com49tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-64089071033504346972012-02-22T11:38:00.003+00:002012-02-22T13:18:49.164+00:00Sourceforge: The home of open source software<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj91snn-XgJl7XlsvEmS4ZZna2aMo7seO9Z0bFZrEx9XKTcZXP7jB3Ac7vuAaxzEdbKeKYj_m3ujnCqE9EUqNs1iCs9ZaOIIk4HI5UG9mtV8Zq4V0XrUI5S63l9-m7e9vflZzg1XdQCgQnZ/s1600/sourceforge.png"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 116px; height: 62px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj91snn-XgJl7XlsvEmS4ZZna2aMo7seO9Z0bFZrEx9XKTcZXP7jB3Ac7vuAaxzEdbKeKYj_m3ujnCqE9EUqNs1iCs9ZaOIIk4HI5UG9mtV8Zq4V0XrUI5S63l9-m7e9vflZzg1XdQCgQnZ/s200/sourceforge.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5711948678771988754" border="0" /></a><a href="http://sourceforge.net/">Sourceforge</a> is an excellent repository of free software for <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">Linux</span>, <span style="font-style: italic;">MacOS </span>and even <span style="font-style: italic;">Android</span>. I have been very busy with the start of the new university year. It is a free office suite featuring a word processor, a spreadsheet program, and a presentation maker. Until recently the software was produced by Oracle Corporation, but fears that they would cease to support the project or stop it being open-source resulted in many of the programmers setting up their own project: <a href="http://www.libreoffice.org/">LibreOffice</a>.
<br />
<br />LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice.org (now produced by Apache Software Foundation), so users of the latter will make an easy transition to the former. The application names have been carried over: Writer is the word processor; Calc for spreadsheets; Impress for presentations; and so on. Furthermore, the look and feel of the packages has changed little.
<br />
<br />Version 3.4 of LibreOffice offers many improvements on version 3.3. There is much better memory management and less of a reliance on Java. Calc is more compatible with Microsoft Excel. But the most improved application is Impress, which flies along compared to the old version.
<br />
<br />The continuing development of LibreOffice seems assured, whereas OpenOffice,org appears to be in limbo. For that reason LibreOffice is now my office suite of choice and I would recommend users of OpenOffice.org switch over to its latest version.

In that time there have been a number of major new software releases. These include version 4 of the Firefox web browser, version 11.04 of the Ubuntu family of Linux operating systems, and version 4.8 of the XFCE desktop environment for Linux.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWYPXSvxVlQCRN5ck-5uJ3iobRHavM-P-7Bcgm3115-s_4Z0eXn1k1BscCGlG0X9j-7WTuqkOhPy2ITOizoRt3KaZzVCUNdEr_BVbEI9QZGSE92eGwcFwLq2gxm1nYY-FzYjVSl27n8TRI/s320/ff.png"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 77px; height: 74px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWYPXSvxVlQCRN5ck-5uJ3iobRHavM-P-7Bcgm3115-s_4Z0eXn1k1BscCGlG0X9j-7WTuqkOhPy2ITOizoRt3KaZzVCUNdEr_BVbEI9QZGSE92eGwcFwLq2gxm1nYY-FzYjVSl27n8TRI/s320/ff.png" alt="" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/">Firefox v4</a><br />The latest version of this web browser sports a new look, more similar to that of Google Chrome. According to Mozilla the latest Firefox is much faster than previous version, making better use of the graphical processing unit to lessen the load on the computer's CPU. I have been running the Linux version (which doesn't have the fancy new look) for a couple of weeks and it does indeed seem to be quicker.<br /><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj11gemLUr3UDdxNSoXYzIhlqIy9ZB589eNiC74Sp2xr96sSM_1s9M-ET1uYYzmOUhPI8wY5OMMG3WClYyJ-wfHzICZkgkjcRUhBdMljMxAoLudFNkXEce9aKroQQATpKVGHsqRoQDZPk1W/s1600/ubuntu.png"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 80px; height: 74px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj11gemLUr3UDdxNSoXYzIhlqIy9ZB589eNiC74Sp2xr96sSM_1s9M-ET1uYYzmOUhPI8wY5OMMG3WClYyJ-wfHzICZkgkjcRUhBdMljMxAoLudFNkXEce9aKroQQATpKVGHsqRoQDZPk1W/s200/ubuntu.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608788646389823922" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/">Ubuntu v11.04</a><br />Codenamed Natty Narwhal, version 11.04 of this Linux operating system makes use of a new default shell interface called Unity rather than the GNOME shell. This move has annoyed some users and according to <a href="http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20110509#feature">some reviews</a> the release has a number of bugs. This may induce some Ubuntu users to switch to derivative distributions: the <a href="http://www.kubuntu.org/">Kubuntu</a> with the KDE interface, <a href="http://lubuntu.net/">Lubuntu</a> with the lightweight LXDE interface, or <a href="http://www.xubuntu.org/">Xubuntu</a> that uses XFCE desktop environment, all of which are also now version 11.04.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVTr9A003wKYUd4SGCwSG81GR9tLmvfYphNjVQZgG9M8J77i95F0pi6FOv5qc0odskBYETr6ITisJFh0FNEythj7fH3SO8bqZh3Y6mWIOMxNiF5sxnGy2AxgYWjNLqArv6_Vi38E1arEe/s1600/xfce.png"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 82px; height: 82px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVTr9A003wKYUd4SGCwSG81GR9tLmvfYphNjVQZgG9M8J77i95F0pi6FOv5qc0odskBYETr6ITisJFh0FNEythj7fH3SO8bqZh3Y6mWIOMxNiF5sxnGy2AxgYWjNLqArv6_Vi38E1arEe/s200/xfce.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5608787628147621010" border="0" /></a><a href="http://www.xfce.org/">XFCE v4.8</a><br />Speaking of XFCE, it has received it's first major upgrade in over two years. You can search for a specific phrase, search only on a particular site, or exclude pages with certain words. You can use the <a href="http://www.google.com/advanced_search?">advanced search page</a> to make use of these or you can use these simple rules of syntax in the normal search field or on Google Toolbar.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">To search for a specific phrase</span><br />Simply put the words in quotation marks. For example, <span style="font-weight: bold;">"Lady Gaga"</span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">To search on a particular site</span><br />Type in the keywords that you wish to sort with 'site:' followed by the address of the web pages that you wish to search. For example, if you wished to search this blog for the word Firefox you would enter <span style="font-weight: bold;">firefox site:bloodycomputer.blogspot.com</span><br /><br />You can also search particular classes of site. If you enter <span style="font-weight: bold;">site:.co.uk football</span>, Google will return only pages on sites that end .co.uk that contain the word football.<br /><br /><span style="font-size:130%;">To omit pages containing certain words</span><br />If you preface a word with - then Google will not list pages that contain that word. For example, if you enter the terms <span style="font-weight: bold;">linux -ubuntu</span>, you will get a list of pages that contain the word 'linux' but not the word 'ubuntu'<br /><br />You can use all of these options in a single search. If you wanted to search the BBC news site for all pages that contain the phrase 'Barrack Obama' but not 'Clinton' then you would enter <span style="font-weight: bold;">site:bbc.co.uk/news "barack obama" -clinton</span>Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-40762582057156474252011-02-16T11:37:00.003+00:002011-02-16T11:47:23.544+00:00Link to Bloody Computer!Even though I redesigned this blog some time ago, I still only offered my old link image rather than use the nice new one that <a href="http://pictsy.blogspot.com/">my brother</a> designed for me. To change this setting simply right-click on the desktop and a menu will appear.<br /><br />On <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows XP</span> you need to open up the 'Arrange icons by' sub-menu and then either tick or untick 'Show Desktop Icons'.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMR-CkxhCFLGbRCyXLAgDEnfN-SWxLLYFqSaNrW0fT6zmrrM_bTLeUZPEX1dlP3bXpLgS-G0BppHKUmJJ96cHGLri6hz_iwjSHqI1UKDU_vmP-aw_QNu1NppU0oypzO3KwWnnnAK2qvHn/s1600/showdeskicons.png"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 322px; height: 210px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQMR-CkxhCFLGbRCyXLAgDEnfN-SWxLLYFqSaNrW0fT6zmrrM_bTLeUZPEX1dlP3bXpLgS-G0BppHKUmJJ96cHGLri6hz_iwjSHqI1UKDU_vmP-aw_QNu1NppU0oypzO3KwWnnnAK2qvHn/s400/showdeskicons.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5567958496513380546" border="0" /></a>On <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows Vista</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">7</span> the option is available in the 'View' menu.<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrcsbxJyW_5N8wqS275cWkPoOBfM1E90ohMereSwoxCH34X76erMsnwoVRPBBTAudIVRdtVP-dTKhpybVrPpWHHXD3v5R7oipYgrByRCWZhbr-34MAui9-dEe_TelbzvSP0LzBa9lJRNxp/s1600/showdeskicons7.png"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 374px; height: 274px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrcsbxJyW_5N8wqS275cWkPoOBfM1E90ohMereSwoxCH34X76erMsnwoVRPBBTAudIVRdtVP-dTKhpybVrPpWHHXD3v5R7oipYgrByRCWZhbr-34MAui9-dEe_TelbzvSP0LzBa9lJRNxp/s400/showdeskicons7.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5567958665334836242" border="0" /></a>Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-38288619499573371022011-01-12T13:10:00.004+00:002011-01-12T13:40:45.387+00:00Dropbox: Internet File Storage<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 52px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSdgGRoGVdGvWt1qrVhjKJGgGGiISYjqZaAUwFAGXVke7SGK0qbr4xD_C28VD7E3roGjn7tpLU2qn3vJQQsxHzng6Kz0j_u_J_vEMrw1grOi8UQzphbGLsr6179SlkVdp1bkBWyyEseKe0/s200/dblogo.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561287411072221410" border="0" /></a>There are a number of sites that offer you storage space to back up or share your files over the Internet. Many of them have a limit on the size of file that can be stored, but this is not the case with <a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a>. <a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a> offers 2gb of storage space for free. This capacity can be increased if you upgrade to one of the payment options.<br /><br /><a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a> provide software that enables you to access your storage space as if it were a drive on your computer. This software is available for Windows, OSX, Linux and a variety of mobile devices. Alternatively you can use the <a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a> web site to upload and download files.<br /><br />Files can be placed in a 'Public' folder so that other <a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a> users may access them, or they can be stored in your private area, in which you can create new folders. <a href="http://db.tt/EUI5zY8">Dropbox</a> also records any activity on your account. Just follow the simple registration procedure and you will have enough space to back up your essential files.Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-52186065456703031652010-12-14T16:30:00.003+00:002010-12-14T17:15:03.160+00:00Google Chrome for Linux<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_8MBd-ebY-qoxj_wNhI3B8spjbWQPfk-0vWf4nNaBPrrQpWlu8uK10I1guvHbNWSHEPrS83t-BgWrGCP1Dup2pXhFuenU8iJjTZ2rxkQFptK-Njb0oyxKk6lY5BzOcolm1jTckrVV82LM/s1600-h/chromeicon.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_8MBd-ebY-qoxj_wNhI3B8spjbWQPfk-0vWf4nNaBPrrQpWlu8uK10I1guvHbNWSHEPrS83t-BgWrGCP1Dup2pXhFuenU8iJjTZ2rxkQFptK-Njb0oyxKk6lY5BzOcolm1jTckrVV82LM/s200/chromeicon.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244796723835271154" border="0" /></a>Back in February I posted a list of <a href="http://bloodycomputer.blogspot.com/2010/02/linux-applications-part-3-web-browsers.html">Linux web browsers</a>. I mentioned that a stable version of <span style="font-style:italic;">Chromium</span> (the open-source basis for <span style="font-style:italic;">Google Chrome</span>) would soon be available for Linux. I see that <span style="font-style:italic;">Chromium</span> is now available in the <span style="font-style:italic;">Ubuntu</span> repositories and a rpm package is also available for <span style="font-style:italic;">Fedora</span> based distributions as far as I can tell.<br /><br />Alternatively, you can now download installation packages for a stable version of <a href="http://www.google.com/chrome?platform=linux"><span style="font-style:italic;">Google Chrome</span></a> for Linux. Packages are available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions of <span style="font-style:italic;">Debian</span>, <span style="font-style:italic;">Ubuntu</span>, <span style="font-style:italic;">Fedora</span> and <span style="font-style:italic;">openSUSE</span>. <span style="font-style:italic;">Chrome</span> is also available in the <span style="font-style:italic;">Ubuntu</span> canonical repository.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE93_RTuir8wIbzXfC_VEuVOTZX9KjuNNLCM8VE3uYyYSCerIlQiN9z-kz85QEh_t9flspFlQWU91pHSiRIvNo8EVP5QGsNc4v35RbWAAvTSPvDfQ7__FT9S5OL4F8_QSueCCBJq-Dg4S7/s1600/chromeshot.png"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 277px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE93_RTuir8wIbzXfC_VEuVOTZX9KjuNNLCM8VE3uYyYSCerIlQiN9z-kz85QEh_t9flspFlQWU91pHSiRIvNo8EVP5QGsNc4v35RbWAAvTSPvDfQ7__FT9S5OL4F8_QSueCCBJq-Dg4S7/s400/chromeshot.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5550586958512629378" border="0" /></a><br />I installed the 64-bit version of <span style="font-style:italic;">Chrome</span> on <span style="font-style:italic;">Xubuntu</span> and it certainly appears to be very fast. I have yet to attempt all my usual web-based tasks on <span style="font-style:italic;">Chrome</span>, but what I have tried has worked well. The growing collection of <a href="https://chrome.google.com/extensions/">extensions for <span style="font-style:italic;">Chrome</span></a> mean that I may be in a position to use it as my main browser rather than <span style="font-style:italic;">Firefox</span>, although I may wait and see what the upcoming <a href="http://www.mozilla.com/en-GB/firefox/beta/">version 4 of <span style="font-style:italic;">Firefox</span></a> has to offer.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE93_RTuir8wIbzXfC_VEuVOTZX9KjuNNLCM8VE3uYyYSCerIlQiN9z-kz85QEh_t9flspFlQWU91pHSiRIvNo8EVP5QGsNc4v35RbWAAvTSPvDfQ7__FT9S5OL4F8_QSueCCBJq-Dg4S7/s1600/chromeshot.png"><br /></a>Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-21809745606209225642010-12-03T13:48:00.003+00:002010-12-03T14:12:59.399+00:00How to start Windows in safe mode<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizlvYzkfMTpxQ9hdNB8ara7G1UUrUgVPQl44dLh-VDWdvn95UK80hba0qtdUFWNdc0LI9FCMkiY21ruoW9aCrOSXhlX9YF_FpwslOhBwPxb4CuqWr9rxdesx3QGq0A1VI9oVQ6eLyR165S/s1600/SafeMode2.gif"><img style="float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 200px; height: 151px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizlvYzkfMTpxQ9hdNB8ara7G1UUrUgVPQl44dLh-VDWdvn95UK80hba0qtdUFWNdc0LI9FCMkiY21ruoW9aCrOSXhlX9YF_FpwslOhBwPxb4CuqWr9rxdesx3QGq0A1VI9oVQ6eLyR165S/s200/SafeMode2.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5546458703995497330" border="0" /></a>Safe mode is very useful if you think you may have an infection on your computer, or if there is some other problem with <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows</span>. Safe mode is a way to start Windows with the minimum of applications and facilities running. Consequently, viruses and the like are not invited to the 'safe mode' party.<br /><br />To enter safe mode on <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows </span>you need to press the <span style="font-weight: bold;">F8 </span>key when the system is booting up. You may have to wait a moment or two for the <a href="http://bloodycomputer.blogspot.com/2008/04/jargon-busting-bios-boots-and-flashing.html">BIOS</a> to finish its work. That is, you should wait for the initial 'splash screen' and system information to disappear. If you miss your opportunity, don't worry, just restart the machine and have another go.<br /><br />After pressing <span style="font-weight: bold;">F8 </span>you will be presented with a menu of 'Advanced Boot Mode' options. For the purposes of this post we are only interested in the first two of these: 'Safe Mode' and 'Safe Mode with Networking'. You should have up-to-date <a href="http://bloodycomputer.blogspot.com/2009/01/two-applications-for-safer-computing.html">anti-virus and other security software</a> installed on your machine. If you do not, you can use 'Safe Mode with Networking' to start up <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows</span>, download, install and run them. However, it is usually best to start the machine using the basic 'Safe Mode' option.<br /><br />When starting in safe mode you will see a stream of file-names and services being started. If there is a problem with <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows </span>you may see an error message at this stage. If so, make a note of the error message and type it into <span style="font-style: italic;">Google </span>(other search engines are available) on another computer in order to learn more about the problem.<br /><br />If all else fails and you still can't use <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows </span>normally, you can use safe mode to copy your important files onto a memory stick or some other device before reinstalling <span style="font-style: italic;">Windows</span>.Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-24128619141144041762010-10-29T17:25:00.001+01:002010-10-29T17:39:30.514+01:00Top Three Web Based Image EditorsIf you are using a computer that doesn't have a decent image editor program, then you can make use of a variety of web-based image editors. Having surveyed those that are freely available, I present a list of the top three. Each of these alows you to perform a variety of simple tasks upon an image, such as cropping and resizing. Each also includes the usual drawing tools as well as supporting layers. Please try them out and leave a comment to share your experiences.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;font-size:130%;" ><a href="http://pixlr.com/editor/">Editor by pixlr.com</a></span><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXpMK-0woIQ1YjiSDg8L2Stek1CCFUI7H-xYUtrn71S9q6EvVz8DEXotwn-kb2ETOtgfXGq3rh3xwnhY17m0-2Vx9891NzkFEbd8S2AqKA7kFTAyN13K6gcSJsXUO15DzJIbdG0GXW378V/s1600/pixlr.png"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 316px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXpMK-0woIQ1YjiSDg8L2Stek1CCFUI7H-xYUtrn71S9q6EvVz8DEXotwn-kb2ETOtgfXGq3rh3xwnhY17m0-2Vx9891NzkFEbd8S2AqKA7kFTAyN13K6gcSJsXUO15DzJIbdG0GXW378V/s400/pixlr.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5533506268833874738" border="0" /></a><span style="font-style: italic;">Editor</span> enables you to create new images or open image files from your computer or from the web in the following formats: bmp, gif, jpg, png, psd and pxd (<span style="font-style: italic;">Editor</span>'s own format). Thankfully, there is a way to fix this.<br /><br />Type <span style="font-style:italic;">about:config</span> in the address bar and press the <span style="font-weight:bold;">Enter</span> key. I have been busy with other matters, but I am glad to say that my summer holiday starts here and I will be able to dedicate more time to <span style="font-style:italic;">Bloody Computer!</span>. So expect to see some new posts soon, including updates of previous tips for Windows 7.Borkimanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334367163579800571noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3824172921391640128.post-51896512172821809892010-05-28T17:18:00.010+01:002010-05-28T17:42:04.240+01:00How to copy charts into a word processorWhen copying charts into a word processor, whether in Microsoft Office from <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel </span>to <span style="font-style: italic;">Word </span>or in openoffice.org from <span style="font-style: italic;">Calc</span> to <span style="font-style: italic;">Writer</span>, the software embeds a special object that links back to the original spreadsheet. If you then change the details in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel </span>spreadsheet the<span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>chart in the <span style="font-style: italic;">Word</span> document will change accordingly. In many cases this is advantageous; however, it can cause problems if the <span style="font-style: italic;">Word</span> document cannot 'see' the <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel</span> file, for example, if you email the <span style="font-style: italic;">Word </span>file to someone without the <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel</span> file. It is generally better to paste the chart as an image in the first place using the 'Paste special' facility.<br /><br />I will start by explaining how to do this in Microsoft Office:<br /><br />Once you have created your chart in <span style="font-style: italic;">Excel </span>you select it and copy it, as shown here.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjplzDSMG8r6pMnfXNboTj7j82nOCG-ild_LJ9hwmUbEgibzrN6YQtbjyY1u5vgFvzsn7I56Cj-3cGoChjm1JiGxKZVzPRZqTeG6evtQfFt_0i8wzfpKEreRHBMic7xHMLftJWG4eD-yE3Z/s1600/chart2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 248px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjplzDSMG8r6pMnfXNboTj7j82nOCG-ild_LJ9hwmUbEgibzrN6YQtbjyY1u5vgFvzsn7I56Cj-3cGoChjm1JiGxKZVzPRZqTeG6evtQfFt_0i8wzfpKEreRHBMic7xHMLftJWG4eD-yE3Z/s400/chart2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476359582889404482" border="0" /></a><br />In older versions of <span style="font-style: italic;">Word </span>you pull down the 'Edit' menu and select 'Paste Special'. You may have to wait a moment for all the menu items to be revealed.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9DqHnWUkzYsf80t9gh0cGgNEAsZF0FzWB_UYCNj8Br23whUME-pXM5vve7XCZ-fTPQAAnavs8W9Sm3ULp34jkaZe0nXxZZuF83dg6B1zgRBG7L37GpeuUUvoxqYtobPZHO2lvA1wHPGBj/s1600/chart3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 230px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9DqHnWUkzYsf80t9gh0cGgNEAsZF0FzWB_UYCNj8Br23whUME-pXM5vve7XCZ-fTPQAAnavs8W9Sm3ULp34jkaZe0nXxZZuF83dg6B1zgRBG7L37GpeuUUvoxqYtobPZHO2lvA1wHPGBj/s400/chart3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476359856919970706" border="0" /></a><br />In the latest versions of <span style="font-style: italic;">Word</span>, 'Paste special' is in a menu underneath the 'Paste' button.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTlkcmNsXXK7wnvRaZOLLwE6CTllGgDLFaKlfIkPVCSgBv_nAwtawXNgcToaN1sL3PpvuXST54TdbkvM9OBmDVoWhS13thUR7PyWD5plcyDnXVswYxUwAXtHdNzbrJNfOEjCdLw4bOypkP/s1600/chart6.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTlkcmNsXXK7wnvRaZOLLwE6CTllGgDLFaKlfIkPVCSgBv_nAwtawXNgcToaN1sL3PpvuXST54TdbkvM9OBmDVoWhS13thUR7PyWD5plcyDnXVswYxUwAXtHdNzbrJNfOEjCdLw4bOypkP/s400/chart6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476359972913476882" border="0" /></a><br />A box will open, from which you select 'Picture (Enhanced Metafile)', and click OK.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF4ZGYvdn5RHYfXTZyX6OKBqEHJOnknujyv_ucXUAA51qp2lZEwi3n6twBWHhB0RmpLiKXdrg0I5Z1OsellNaNg1hElKbhGRs-_lcjo11Vt1ffQcvdHdX1uhrk4cdjxKJM5cYW_GvBxo9z/s1600/chart4.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 251px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF4ZGYvdn5RHYfXTZyX6OKBqEHJOnknujyv_ucXUAA51qp2lZEwi3n6twBWHhB0RmpLiKXdrg0I5Z1OsellNaNg1hElKbhGRs-_lcjo11Vt1ffQcvdHdX1uhrk4cdjxKJM5cYW_GvBxo9z/s400/chart4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476360208602678162" border="0" /></a>This will then insert the chart as a picture, which you can manipulate like any other imported image.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJf2A-P7EFri7ZBEBNkp1ELHP5bfJynUIGK2L4aYXQSjcLi76XJa9xFGRv7diXvgDJPp2EljvxpG9eBKZwmfYxLMcOQz3IzpaCnbWJaGLDevHktk82m9cURV8Qnmy-auVd1_dAFmetMmV2/s1600/chart5.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJf2A-P7EFri7ZBEBNkp1ELHP5bfJynUIGK2L4aYXQSjcLi76XJa9xFGRv7diXvgDJPp2EljvxpG9eBKZwmfYxLMcOQz3IzpaCnbWJaGLDevHktk82m9cURV8Qnmy-auVd1_dAFmetMmV2/s400/chart5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5476360528291090002" border="0" /></a>In openoffice.org, the procedure is pretty much the same as above, with 'Paste special' is in the 'Edit' menu, or alternatively you can use a keyboard shortcut: <span style="font-weight: bold;">Ctrl</span> + <span style="font-weight: bold;">Shift</span> + <span style="font-weight: bold;">V.</span> The major difference from above is that the following box will open when you select 'Paste special'.
