Recent freeware releases

It has been some time since I last posted on this blog. In that time there have been a number of major new software releases. These include version 4 of the Firefox web browser, version 11.04 of the Ubuntu family of Linux operating systems, and version 4.8 of the XFCE desktop environment for Linux.

Firefox v4
The latest version of this web browser sports a new look, more similar to that of Google Chrome. According to Mozilla the latest Firefox is much faster than previous version, making better use of the graphical processing unit to lessen the load on the computer's CPU. I have been running the Linux version (which doesn't have the fancy new look) for a couple of weeks and it does indeed seem to be quicker.

Ubuntu v11.04
Codenamed Natty Narwhal, version 11.04 of this Linux operating system makes use of a new default shell interface called Unity rather than the GNOME shell. This move has annoyed some users and according to some reviews the release has a number of bugs. This may induce some Ubuntu users to switch to derivative distributions: the Kubuntu with the KDE interface, Lubuntu with the lightweight LXDE interface, or Xubuntu that uses XFCE desktop environment, all of which are also now version 11.04.

XFCE v4.8
Speaking of XFCE, it has received it's first major upgrade in over two years. This is my desktop environment of choice and I looked forward to experiencing the new features including a fancy new panel. While v4.8 still has a few minor bugs, it is still usable.

If you would like to share any other recent free software releases with other readers then feel free to leave a comment with a link.

Great post - I've not used XFCE yet but I'm going to give it a go.

In terms of new releases can I also recommend LibreOffice - Part of the openoffice team have branched off and so far it's looking promising.

Thank you all for the comments.

JaseP: Thanks for the heads up about LibreOffice. I see that they have released a new version recently. I will give it a go and share my findings on this blog.

Arvind: If you blog about computers then I would be interested in a link swap. Please let me know the url of your blog.

Budi: I have added a link to your blog. Please let me know when you have added mine.

As for increasing traffic, I find Entrecard and Adgitize to be quite effective, but nothing beats regular good-quality posts.

Wow: Linux is probably not for the feint hearted. If you are however, quite computer savvy and like a challenge, it can be very rewarding.

I have downloaded Firefox V4 but having some issues with using Add-ons in this Browser. So should i remove this or i will be habitual for the same ??

Borkiman said...

Online PC Repair: Firefox add-ons are version dependent. Make sure that you update them to the latest version. Some older add-ons may not work on v4 because they are no longer being developed, but you may find an alternative that does the same thing.

Firefox ver 4.0 is out but a lot of add-ons are incompatible…sigh..

There was a "rapid release" for Firefox 5. This version could be referred and understood better as 4.1 though.

Bug fixes...no big features...but still the lovable Firefox that some of we geeks have come to become attached to. ;)

Nice one. On the other hand, if you need help or your anti-virus protection can't clean the disk, then you are best advised to take your computer to a good professional repair shop where they have tools to try and clean and recover your disk as best as possible OR you can settle for a remote pc repair for a more FASTER computer repair service.

I am currently using Firefox version 4 which I thought in the first place is a Chrome because it look the same. Anyway, I like using this one. This is much faster than the older version.

I find that Firefox is slow and some of their useful plug-ins are no longer supported and alternatives are not free. Been using Chrome and really like it.
